Semenya out of Commonwealth Games, Ticket Sales Poor, by Alfons Juck, Note by Larry Eder

The Commonwealth Games  has a long and storied past. The matches in athletics alone have been amazing. The 2010 version, which opens this weekend, is having both media  and security problems. Neither of those have helped ticket sales, which are at a paltry 200,000 out of an estimated 1.7 million tickets available.Security concerns have kept many athletes away. While UK athletics and many other teams have kept a stiff upper lip, elite athletes have several concerns: security issues, the absolute exhaustion many face at the end of a ten month season, and how to prepare for 2011-2012.India has huge potential in the global sporting world. They have had some outstanding athletes in track & field, and I believe we will see many more to come. They apparently understand cricket there as well, which, I assume, like American baseball, is a wonderful excuse to watch a sporting event while consuming adult beverages in a warm climate.  more...

Lessons from the games

Never in all the years I have known him have I ever agreed with Mani Shankar Aiyar about anything. So it is with some nervousness I admit that on the Commonwealth Games I agree with him one thousand per cent. Who was the lunatic who bid for them in the first place? He needs to be identified and horsewhipped in public for putting India in such a disgraceful situation. If it was Suresh Kalmadi, then horsewhipping is not punishment enough because having landed the Games he should at least have known that he should do nothing that would expose India’s corrupt and incompetent underside to an international audience.  more...

Few bookings for Games hotel rooms yet

It was expected to be a deluge, but so far, it’s just a trickle. Hotels in New Delhi which earmarked thousands of rooms for Commonwealth Games visitors are still waiting for the bookings. Delays in preparing Games venues, corruption charges and competitive mudslinging are seen to have taken the sheen out of Incredible India and frustrated the travel and hospitality industry, though Games officials put up a brave face. The 19th Commonwealth Games, an 11-day mega-sporting event, kicks off in the Capital less than two months from now.  more...

CWG: Only games, no sport

The Holy Lord, a last-minute miraculous falling in place of things, a big stick, generous money flow and the rare coming together of the ‘world famous in India’ babudom will probably scrape us through the Commonwealth Games (CWG). The tragic, ‘unHindi’ movie ending to the tale is that India is unlikely to emerge the undisputed winner even if she successfully manages to wave off the last athlete into the final departing flight of an A-380 from the hopefully still swanky T3 terminal.  more...

Slaving for the Commonwealth Games: New Delhi 2010What a disgraceful and shameful nation India is, uncivilised barbarians, who are forcing their children to carry out extreme workout, burden on their shoulders to build the commonwealth stadium, as the Indian capital struggles to get ready for this year's Commonwealth Games. It will be interesting to see how many Commonwealth countries will raise the questions concerning the child labor, it pity, surely no athlete would want to set foot in any building built using child labourFrom:GreaterPakistanViews:2568 89ratingsTime:05:05More inNews & Politics  more...
